I had big plans for my birthday weekend. I was going to spend every day we had at the hotel with friends doing things I love. But God had other plans for that week. I got sick to the point that I voluntarily had my blood checked if I had dengue. My fever spiked to 40*C the whole day Tuesday, then nothing the next. Then back again. Oh I just didn’t know what to do anymore! I cancelled my plans with friends and even our hotel reservation (but turns out they didn’t move it). My blood work came up normal, I HAD NOTHING. No viral or bacterial infection. NOTHING. I probably had the usual flu. But because I never get just the usual flu and fever that high, I was genuinely bothered.

The day before my birthday, I was sort of feeling better, though a little bit light headed (low blood sugar maybe from not eating well?). I called up the hotel to check if our reservation was moved, deciding that if it wasn’t moved, we’d just go that day. My reservation wasn’t moved, so I packed my whole family for a 5-day staycation in the city. I don’t know how I did it, probably sitting down, but I was feeling so light headed and very nauseous. I was just determined to leave home and relax at the hotel instead. And relax we did. We had a staycation at Astoria Plaza Ortigas. For 5 days and 4 nights, we get to live in the middle of Metro Manila. But we didn’t do much going out while we were there. I laid out the whole day at the hotel. I wanted to surround myself with friends but I was just so out of it.

Nothing wrong with having staycations every now and then. šŸ˜‰

The next day, my birthday, I ran errands and bought my favorite food at Chili’s for dinner. I was pretty bummed that I didn’t get the cake I wanted for my birthday. I have been looking forward to it since May when I discovered that little bake shop. Ugh. Two of my kabarkada from college came over with food and cake! Super opposite of what should have happened. Thank you sooo much Celine and Dawn for dropping by and staying ’til the next morning for chikka chikka. God gave me great friends kahit may drama drama paminsan-minsan. šŸ˜‰

That night, Jacob also suddenly had fever. Immediately gave him paracetamol and sent him to bed. It was his first time sleeping in a separate room from us. He said he liked his bedroom because it was his favorite color. The next day, Saturday, our close friends came over after dinner for game night. I told them that I can’t throw myself a party because I had zero energy to cook and prepare stuff, so suggested that we just do our game night there. We only had Monopoly for board games, so we had to improvise with Monopoly pieces so we could play Resistance. And boy I sucked at it. Super fail slip-ups and I’m too obvious. Such a bad liar. I only prepped some beef tacos that night but we had wine, lots of wine, and the boys had other drinks. I went to bed past 4 AM already, we didn’t even get to say bye to our friends.

We were supposed to have breakfast at the hotel’s restaurant but we missed it because we slept in. So off we went to Kapitolyo where we had brunch at Milky & Sunny. I liked my breakfast platter a lot. Oscar didn’t like his tapa too much, he has very high standards. The whole day we just hung out. I think Jacob took 3 baths in the tub that day just to entertain him. He was still feeling a bit warm so I didn’t want him to go to the pool yet. Dinner was Oriental Pearl (previously named Jade Palace) and some Andok’s.

The boys enjoyed this little corner while we waited for the food.

This made my day :)

Our last day, Oscar and I had buffet breakfast at the hotel. Nothing notable or fancy, but we were filled. I asked him which hotel is his favorite when it comes to buffet breakfast. He has bad memory, so obviously he couldn’t give me an answer. Mine was at The Manila Peninsula 2 years ago? It was delicious. I also enjoyed the buffet breakfast we had at our Anniversary staycation in Oakwood Joy-Nostalg earlier this month. I’ll blog about that later. šŸ˜€

I don’t know why, but it’s always on my birthday when things don’t fall out as planned. It’s either someone gets sick or there’s a typhoon, or a lot of our friends couldn’t make it. This is such a pet-peeve being OC. BUT I am super thankful that my birthday weekend wasn’t tiring, I got to rest and be with family. There will be other days that I will be able to do all those other activities I wanted to do that weekend for sure. I think me getting sick was God’s way of telling me to slow down and just relax on my birthday. No need to complicate things and exhaust myself.

Once a year, I get to have this as my view for a few days.

hotels= no cleaning and other household chores for moms. I love spending some days like this because the load of work is less.

  2. Misters. You usually can’t trust them when it comes to remembering dates and mine’s hard to please too, when it comes to food especially meat.

Belated happy birthday, Roxi dear! Sad to read that things didn’t go as planned, but it’s nice to see that you were able to make the most out of the situation naman. I hope that you and the boys are all feeling better now. Hugs, and hope to see you again soon!

  4. Likewise, planned activities outside our homes sometimes failed and that’s normal. Besides, staycation at the metro hotel is more fun and bonding’s exciting.

  6. It really was God’s way of telling you to just slow down and bond! I love how your friends were so thoughtful and brought you food when you were too tired.

Belated happy birthday, though it was spent sick. By the way, a flu is still a viral infection, so it is still considered infectious to others, especially kids.

I love the color theme! Such a cute combination. I don’t know about that egg though. If there’s one thing that could ruin my breakfast, it’s a poorly made sunny side up egg :((((

I actually love the concept of staycation as you feel refreshed after staying away from home and endless chores at home.

  14. Oooh, we love staycations!! Astoria looks really nice. I’ve been there once but not as a guest but a performer. I sang at the buffet restaurant at the Ground level. They serve great dishes and we also tried their Japanese Restaurant and I must say that they have the best slightly torched sushi I’ve ever tasted. šŸ™‚

First of all, belated happy birthday! Sorry to hear that you almost did not enjoy your birthday because of the unexpected circumstances but at least you were able to take some rest which I’m sure your body badly needed.

  16. I have stayed in the Astoria Plaza in Ortigas when I worked there before. I like the spacious place and also the kitchenette.

Belated though. I guess it’s somehow a kind of different birthday gift for you to spend intimate time for your family even though sickness came along but it’s a time for you to care for them just spend a day with them. Sometimes we are always preoccupied with the daily tasks that we can’t even take a rest, I mean complete rest until the day we get sick.

  18. Hannah Iway says:

Oh How I LOVE staycations! It’s the only time when I can lie on bed for many hours, without thinking for breakfast or dinner!
